  Latein1984theSouthernAreaEducationOfficecommencedaprogramofconsultationwiththeHallettCovecommunitywiththeobjectiveofestablishinganR-10school.InMarch1985aParents'ReferenceGroupwasformedandinSeptemberofthatyearestablisheditselfasanInterimSchoolCouncil.

  HallettCoveSchoolopenedinFebruary.1987astheonlyR-10schoolinmetropolitanAdelaide.MsSusanMonkswastheschool'sfirstPrincipalandtherewere300studentsfromReceptiontoYear7onthefirstdayofschool.Theschoolgrewrapidlyandclassroomaccommodationshortagesandzoningissuesweretopicsofconversationthroughout1988-89.

  DrPeterJacksonwasthesecondPrincipaloftheschoolandcommenceddutiesmid-waythroughthe1990schoolyear.Forthefirsttimeinitsshorthistorytheschoolhadallofitssolidbuildingsavailableandallofitslevels.R-10,inplace.

  AnopeningceremonyfortheschooloccurredonMay17,1991withtheHon..GregCrafler.MinisterofEducationofficiating.During1991areferencegrouprecommendedtotheMinisterofEducationthatHallettCoveSchoolprovideYears11and12education.Thedecisiontoaddseniorsecondaryeducationtotheschoolwasmadein1992.

  Theschoolhaditsthirdprincipal,MrJimDavies.appointedin1993.Year11studiescommencedin1995andYear12in1996,makingHallettCoveSchoolmetropolitanAdelaide'sthirdR-12school.Amajorbuildingprojectoccurredthroughout1995-96-97tocaterfortheadditionoftheseniorsecondarycurriculum.

  MiddleSchoolatHallettCoveencompassesYears7throughto9.Ourcurriculumandmethodologiesaredesignedtomeettheacademic,social,physical,behaviouralandemotionalneedsofadolescents.Thesub-schoolisledbytheAssistantPrincipalMiddleSchool.MiddleSchoolstudentsandtheirfamiliesaresupportedbytheYearLevelCoordinatorforeachyearlevel,andthestudentcounsellors.

  Year7

  Inrecognitionofthespecialneedsofyoungadolescents,weofferYear7studentsaunique,tailormadeprogram.OurYear7Homegroupsareco-locatedwithYear8HomegroupsintheMiddleSchoolareaofthesecondaryschool.GoodrelationshipsprovidethefoundationforlearningandthuseachofthethreeclasseshasaHomegroupteacherwhoteachesthemforoneormoresubjects,andwhohasresponsibilityfortheirdaytodaywelfare.TheteamisledbytheYear7Co-ordinator.

  OurYear7teachershavearangeofspecialistexpertiseandworkasateamtodeliverthecurriculumacrosstheclassesdependingontheirareaofspecialisation.Together,theyalsoshareresponsibilityforthesocialandemotionaldevelopmentandwellbeingofthestudents.Inaddition,Year7studentsalsoundertakeArts,HomeEconomics,TechnicalStudies,InformationTechnology,HealthandPEandwithaspecialistteacherusingsecondaryschoolfacilities.StudentsalsouseSciencelaboratoriesandequipment,enhancingtheirlearninginapracticalway.

  OurYear7programengagesyoungpeopleintheirlearningandprovidesnewandexcitingchallengesforthemthataregenerallynotavailableinaprimaryschoolsetting.Itprovidesforasmoothtransitionofourstudentstosecondaryschoolastheyarefamiliarwiththesizeandcomplexityofourschool,andcurriculumandwaysofworkingthatdifferfromthoseinatraditionalPrimarySchool.

  Year8

  AtYear8,wehaveasignificantintakeofnewstudentsfromanumberofprimaryschools.Tofosterthesmoothtransitionforallstudents,thestudentshaveaHomegroupteacherwhoteachesthemforeitherMathsandScienceorEnglishandStudiesofSocietyandEnvironment.Thisstructureensuresthatthetwo“core”teachersknowthestudentsandtheirneedswell. Inadditiontoafullyearofthefourcoresubjects,ourstudentsexperienceabroadrangeofcurriculumofferingsincludingTheArts(Art,Drama,Music),HomeEconomicsandTextiles,HealthandPhysicalEducation,Japanese,TechnologyStudiesandInformationTechnology.

  Tohelpstudentsbuildpositiverelationshipswiththeirclassmates,teacherandotheryear8studentsandteachers,theYear8campisheldinthefirstfewweeksofterm1.Formanystudents,itisatimewhennewandoftenenduringfriendshipsareformed.ThecampisheldatVictorHarborwithstudentsbeinginvolvedinarangeofactivitiesacrossthethreedaysofcamp,andisanintegralpartofthetransitionprogram.OurYear11BigBuddiesattendthecampwiththestudentsandrunanumberofactivitieswiththem.TheBigBuddiesarestudentleaderswhoworkwiththeYear8studentsthroughouttheyear.

  Uniquely,weareabletooffera“BoyOnly”classatYear8.Theneedsofboysandgirlsdodiffer,andresearchhasshownthatboysthriveinanenvironmentwhichcaterstotheirneeds.Thecurriculumandmethodologiesusedarethosemostsuitedtoboys,andtheteacherschoosetoworkwiththisclassbecauseoftheirinterestandexpertiseintheeducationofboys.Overseveralyears,ourdatahasconfirmedthattheboysinthisclassmakeexcellentprogressacademically,socially,emotionallyandbehaviourally.

  WealsoofferaVolleyballFocusprogramfromYear8.Studentsapplyforentrytothisprogramandaselectionprocessisusedtocreatetheseclasses.Studentsinthevolleyballprogramparticipateinanumberoftournaments,withteamsbeingselectedfortheNationalTitlesheldinMelbournetowardstheendoftheschoolyear.

  Year9

  AtYear9,werecognisethatstudentsarebeginningthetransitiontotheirsenioryearsofschooling.Studentsaregivensomeflexibilityinselectingtheircourseofstudy,withinaframeworktoensurethatfutureoptionsremainopen.Allstudentsundertakeafullyearofthefourcoresubjectsandthenchoosefromwithinapatternofsubjectsbasedontheirinterestsandfuturepathways.Inrecognitionoftheneedforstudentstobechallengedandextendedacademically,wealsoofferHighPerformanceMathsandScienceforstudents.TheYear9PastoralCareprogramfocusesonindividualpersonaldevelopmentandcommunityserviceactivities.
